Pop Art and Upholstery

Are you a fan of the pop art movement? Pop art culture is very inspirational for the designers. Just one piece of furniture inspired by pop art can make your home look very chic. Different colors can be used in furniture together with some prints and patterns. Use vivid and strong colors for furniture designs. Comic prints are very often used as designs for the furniture. The 60′s style furniture will look great in a pop art style interior design.

4 most popular drapery pleat styles

Different drapery pleat styles are one of the things that make custom drapes stand out from off-the-rack drapes. Pleats give drapery panels structure and shape. Without pleating, drapery panels can look limp and lifeless; pleating gives your drapes a presence. The terminology of the window treatments is not familiar to everyone, so we wanted to share with you a different styles of drapery pleats. We asked Home by Eva’s expert, Eva Suwak, which drapery pleats are the most popular with our clients.

  1. French Pinch pleat

A French Pinch Pleat is our number one requested style of drapery. It is a classic style that’s timeless and gives a room an elegant, finished look. This style of drapery easily attaches to a standard curtain rod via hooks on the back of the pleats or via eyelet rings using decorative hardware. It is a series of equally spaced single, double, or triple pleats that are pinched in the center, forming fans above and below the pinch.

2. Parisian Pleat

A Parisian Pleat also known as the Euro Pleat is quickly becoming a popular choice with our clients since it has a more modern sleek looking finish. Similar in style to the French, the Parisian is simply pinched at the very top. The Parisian pleated headers allow drapes to flow with elegant ease.

3. Cartridge Pleat

Another type is the Cartridge Pleat has a unique, stylish look. The shape is created by rolling the fabric into a cylinder at the top of the drapery panel. This style is most often recommended for use as decorative stationary panels, with blinds behind them, for a custom layered look.

4. Inverted Box Pleat

The final style of pleat is the Inverted Box Pleat. The Inverted Box Pleat features a neat and tailored style with a fullness on the back of the drape, but a flat face surface suitable for contemporary interior design schemes. Some clients request a double length pleat for rooms with tall ceilings, adding to the drama of the finished look.

Performance Fabrics have improved so much since they were introduced to the industry back in the 1960s. You may have heard of the original Sunbrella fabrics: they were firm, durable and usually very brightly colored. Performance Fabrics have now evolved to include a wide array of softer textures and so many new colors and patterns, and best of all they are machine washable.

Commercial Projects

Metro Plaza Center, Reston VA

Metro Plaza Center, Reston VA

One of the latest of the many design projects we’ve worked on recently was a commercial project in the Metro Plaza Center in Reston. It’s a dramatic steel and glass building. Home by Eva brought the finishing touches to the meeting rooms with double-sided privacy draperies. But these aren’t just any draperies, these are mounted on state-of-the-art Swiss-engineered track draperies.

In 1952, a Swiss engineer developed the first silent curtain track system that became the basis for this new type of curtain system, termed “Silent Gliss”. The term literally means: Silent, “without sound” and Gliss, short for the musical term “glissando”, meaning when one note slides to the next. It’s almost musical, or theatrical, in its smooth and silent functioning.

Using the ultra-sophisticated technology of the Silent Gliss track, we installed a hand operated track system, with custom made double-sided privacy draperies for the glass walled meeting rooms that allows for privacy during meetings, but keeping an elegant appearance in and out of the rooms.

The Silent Gliss system works both in commercial and domestic spaces. We highly recommend this system to our clients with oversized glass windows in your office, home or apartment. And when its combined with your personal fabric choices we can create a space that is both highly functional and contemporary to fit your style.

The Art of an Easter Egg

While visiting Vienna, Austria during the pre-Easter holidays I visited Freyung Easter Market. The centre of this small market is traditionally dominated by the “Ostereistand”, with box after box of painted eggshells and egg-shaped decorations. You can even buy ostrich eggshells to decorate at home.

When I say eggs, I mean there are lots of them. More eggs than at an omelette factory. Eggs in a myriad of colours and designs, ready to hang on your Easter tree.

It’s worth taking a few moments to browse the displays, as some of the egg designs are quite beautiful: painted scenes; Easter, imperial, floral, and animal motifs; lacework decor; eggs as globes etc. etc.

Each egg was a piece of art, one more unique and beautiful than other. I loved it so much, than I visited it twice. And now you can too. Enjoy!

Story of the wooden flowers.

The story of the wooden flowers started with my assignment to design a room for a 5 year old girl. Our focal point was a bed and a high ceiling. When thinking how to cover the space about the headboard, I came to the idea of the canopy that would be suitable for a 5 year old girl. The wooden flowers that would hold tulle fabric were perfect. So I went to work: designing, jigsawing and painting the flowers. Once installed on the wall and draped with the pink tulle fabric I loved the final effect. And so did the little girl. We added fairy decal on the wall, colorful chandelier in the window nook with the custom seat cushions. The window treatments were custom made cornices in purple and white geometric pattern. The furniture was custom painted to match the bed. We continued the flower design on the drawer knob on the nightstand's drawer and added the same wooden flower on the headboard to create a diamond shape of flowers.

More pictures of the fairy room are in the Image gallery under Kids' rooms tab. Enjoy!

What we need in 2018? The Pantone Color Institute thinks whatever that might be will come in the deep purple hue of "Ultra Violet," its color of the year.
The color wasn't chosen because it's regal, though it resembles a majestic shade. It was chosen to evoke a counterculture flair, a grab for originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.
The 2018 color of the year follows 2017's "Greenery," a grassy fresh, revitalizing shade that reflected new beginnings.
The purple choice, a la Prince speaks to rebellion, finding new ways to interpret our lives and surroundings.
So if your favorite color has always been purple, you might be in for a lucky year.

Upholstery - Is it worth it?

Home by Eva says, Yes! Furniture quality and sentimental value are key factors in deciding whether to invest in upholstery furniture. One of the best ways to truly personalize your home decor and give it that unique look,  is to professionally reupholster your existing furniture to create an item that is one of a kind. Creating this piece keeps tradition by adding zesty flare with a new fabric.

Before and after pictures are a great way for us to showcase our work and how we implement your design needs into your home.  An antique sofa or chair can transform into a unique statement piece. You first start by selecting a fabric of your liking. The selection of the right fabric is a fun process, and we will help you to select the right fabric that will give your new reupholstered piece of furniture a wow factor.  We are very proud of our top notch craftsmanship. Here are our before & after photos, hoping you ask questions and inquire about upholstering your own furniture.

Window treatments - pinch pleated draperies

Choosing the right fabric to match the dramatic ceiling was our number one focus. The wallpaper is called channels and is by Kelly Wearstler. The fabric for the draperies is by the same designer. The beautiful embroidered pattern compliments perfectly the ceiling wallpaper and finishes this stunning dining room in the Georgetown house. Do you agree?

    Spring will be here soon.

Being snowed in during the biggest snowstorm of the last few years has me looking at the calendar and realizing that we are closer to spring than we think. It doesn't look so outside, with 2 feet of snow piled up everywhere, but it is true. Spring will be here soon. Snow will melt in a week and expose our sad-looking outdoor space. This is the space that will be our relaxing oasis for  most  months of this year. It is natural that the outdoor furniture and cushions get beaten during the winter months, especially if you have not covered them or brought them indoors. But don't worry, everything can be fixed. And the sooner we start, the better. Start now, so you can be enjoying yourself with the first sunny days. How can we help you? We are already replacing outdoor foams, or the whole cushions, outdoor pillows, sewing outdoor curtains for your porch, providing the best outdoor fabrics available out there. Yes, we work with your design, and we will help you choose the right patterned fabric. Our foams are made with cell drainage, so the rain water goes through them like through a sponge. The result is astonishing. You won't recognize your new outdoor space. But hey, making the living area bigger out of outdoor space is a very smart way to add to your house square footage. So go on, have fun, enjoy yourself and put your mark on the outside design. Custom design.

    Slipcovers or upholstery?

It happens quite offten when a new client approches me with a question: "What should I do, a slipcover or upholstery on this chair?"

I decided to shine some light on this difficult decorating dilemma. How do we know what is the right choice for that particular chair? The answer lies in the furniture. The upholstery with a new beautiful fabric enhances the shape of the chair. So if it has great bones, priceless wood or antique shape, let it show. Do the upholstery.

If you have an armchair with no visible wood, like a glider chair from Crate & Barrel, a slipcover is the perfect choice because it will hug the chair tightly, and will fit like a glove.

Do you have an already-existing slipcover on the chair that has seen better days? No problem, do a new one. The fabric of your choice will complement your room decor and the custom choice of fabric will be many times more fashion forward than what you will find online.

Every upholstery transforms the chair completely, if it has broken legs, broken springs, lack of foam, we reconstruct the chair before we give it a new look with a new fabric.

Don't be afraid, make your old piece of furniture shine like new.

    Outdoor curtains

Recently I went on vacation to Key West, Fl. Never having travelled there before,  I was pleasantly surprised by the charming little town that Ernest Hemingway made famous. Not only for its unique vegetation, banyan trees, georgeus snorkeling sea but especially how design loving this town was. Paying attention to everything outdoor, I was in love with the outdoor curtains that made little charming houses so stylish. Yes, it rains there almost every day in the summer, but the outdoor fabrics don't budge. Why don't we use outdoor curtains more in the DC area? Our vegetation is equally lush in the summer, and the curtains can provide much-needed privacy for houses and other private residences. I decided to go for it at my own house, so stay tuned. For now enjoy the photos from Key West where design speaks for itself.

How we make custom indoor or outdoor cushions.

With the summer season in full swing, we all are ejoying time spent outdoors. Our patios  provide us an escape into the outdoors in the privacy of our home. And yes, your sitting area is essentially your new living room outdoors. With an array of outdoor furniture now available in the store or online, one can create a space worth a magazine spread. But how about the cushions? Those need regular upkeep and if the materials which they were made of were not durable, then the cushions have a short lifetime.

So here is a little insight how we proceed when an order is placed for custom made outdoor or indoor cushions.

One of the most important things we take into consideration is how much roof coverage your cushion will have. Using the mesh phifertex fabric on the bottom of the cushions is one way to prolong their life as the water will go through the outdoor open cell foam and the mesh fabric like through a sponge. No threat of mildew there. The outdoor cushion dry this way very fast.

If the cushions are made for sunroom, or open verandas, go for fabric on both sides. We can help with the color choices and will narrow it down for you to have an easier selection if needed.

The outdoor fabric is a must;  our cushion covers are made with zippers, so when you see that they need a wash after the season, just take them off and throw them into the washmaschine.

All the materials used on cushions are made for outdoor use, including the vinyl piping applied on box cushions.

And how about the design? That part you can leave completely to us. Your custom measurements are free as a part of your first free consult. We will draw, cut and in some cases completely design from scratch new cushions.

    Girl's bedroom gets a makeover.

Giving a makeover to a young girl's bedroom is always exciting. We started with bare walls that were 9Ft tall. The bed and the rest of the furniture were white. The room needed color, a lot of happy colors. The only color we had in the room were two jade colored nightstands. Following the lead of the young girl's idea, we wanted to emphasize the jade color but add pink, purple, orange colors to make the bedroom a happy place. So I went on to search for the right fabrics. We wanted a great pattern that would show nicely on the draperies hanging from the canopy and matching roman shade. The design of the canopy was cut out of wood and was installed right to the ceiling. This way the height of the draperies would show nicely in full lenght. The bench cushion and the pillow were a match and the little orange pillow was a great accent to all of the colors. The bedding is from Pottery barn.  This turned out to be a great project and the result was a one happy girl.

    Outdoor fabrics

With spring around the corner, it is time to take a look at your outdoor space. If you are feeling that the outdoor cushions have seen their better days and are in need of a makeover, look no further. The latest collection of outdoor fabrics available from Home by Eva is absolutely beautiful. The fabrics resist mildew and are suitable for chair or chaise cushions, pillows, upholstery, table covers or drapery panels. The colors and pattern designs are suitable to fit any outdoor decor.

Our special outdoor foam lets water pass right through and has excellent air circulation. This foam has an exploded open cell construction which allows liquids to flow right through, and humidity to rapidly evaporate, instead of acting like a moisture trapping sponge.

Combining our outdoor fabrics with our outdoors foams guarantees that you will enjoy your new outdoor cushions for years to come.

So enjoy the slideshow and be prepared for your outdoor space to become the hub of the neighborhood.

Here are some outdoor fabric samples for inspiration.

    Outdoor & Indoor cushions

When a friend asked me to make  outdoor cushions for her nice pool area, I was ready for the task. We chose a great patterned outdoor fabric, decided on the piping color, did all the custom measurements on all pool furniture. It included four chaise lounges and two pool reclining chairs. The outdoor fabric was going to unite them all in a beautiful custom design.
For the outdoor foam we used a special outdoor foam that lets water pass right through and has excellent air circulation. This foam has an exploded open cell construction which allows liquids to flow right through, and humidity to rapidly evaporate, instead of acting like a moisture trapping sponge. To cut the foam, we used electric knife for the exact and clean cut.

Here are a few photos to document the final stage of the project.
